About

G.O.H.S. Peer Tutoring Program

WHAT:

Great Oak High School Peer Tutoring Program: available before school, at lunch, and after school in any needed subject.

WHY:

To unite Great Oak High School students through the shared desire to achieve academic success and to raise the student body grade point average.

HOW:

Those who are interested in tutoring will be asked to fill out a mentor slip in the library where we will have a blue application box. Students may apply to be both a tutor and to get a personal tutor but must fill out different slips. Tutors will be certified before they can tutor.

TUTORING CERTIFICATION:

Each tutor must go through a simple certification process to ensure that tutors are instructing and not just doing the work for their tutee. We will go over how one should go about tutoring and lay out their responsibilities. We will then split up into groups of four and practice using fake scenarios. Two people will act as observers and the other two will practice taking turns as tutor and tutee. We will need adult supervision and consultation for this to be effective.
    We need to address:
      • How to keep your tutee focused.
      • How to make your tutee think for him or her self.
      • How to contact your tutee.

The G.O.H.S. Tutoring Presidency will meet every week to match tutors and tutees according to schedule and subject. Once schedules are coordinated, tutors will be given a name and phone number, it is then their responsibility to contact their tutee.

To record community service hours, a log in book will be at the front library desk. To make sure that the log in time is legitimate, the tutee and a librarian must also sign for verification. Tutor shirts will be ordered for each tutor to wear when they tutor. A tutoring “help” sign in the center of the table so students can ask these tutors for help. For those who do not have a personal tutor and need additional help, a sheet will be posted regarding when certain subjects will be available for tutorage. We need at least one person available for math and any other popular core subjects at least during lunch and after school.
